5 minutes with one of London’s leading Spoken Word poet: Sophia Thakur
ACESAspire: Hi Sophia, How old are you?
ACESAspire: What do you do now?
Just finished my A levels, and University in September, God willing.
ACESAspire: What is your favourite subject?
ACESAspire: Who inspires you?
Everyday life, everyday people and their journeys or stories.
ACESAspire: When did you start writing poems?
At the age of 14 I believe.
ACESAspire: What is spoken word?
It’s when the words on paper come to life via performance.
ACESAspire: Who is your favourite artist?
Spoken word artist? Kareem Parkins Brown hands down! Amazing artist.
ACESAspire: What was it like for you at school when you were younger?
I didn’t like primary school very much, but I enjoyed secondary and sixth form very much. Sixth form is where you get the chance to excel and potentially set up your future.
ACESAspire: If you had to go back and say anything to your 16 year-old-self, what would you say?
Don’t do it! Whatever ‘it’ may be.
ACESAspire: How would you encourage students who do not feel that there is any prospects for them in life?
I tend to try and find where their passion lies, and then show them the stories of others in that field. Most of the time, everything starts with a simple step, so we would create a step by step journey to where try wish to be. A blueprint.
ACESAspire: If you were queen of the world, what would you change about the world and why?
More help for the homeless, and with that, more effective checks on those who claim to be homeless or rely on benefits.
ACESAspire: Tell us about your tour, where will you be and what you will be doing.
I will be in and around London. This summer, I’m doing quite a bit with the IYAF which should be fun. More info on that is available on my social networking sites.
