INTERVIEW- Shevelle Roberts (Art and Fashion Blogger)

What is your name?
Shevelle Roberts

Tell us about yourself.

I’m a student currently in the final year of university, I want to open my own art gallery, I love art and sometimes I randomly dance and sing walking down the street.

I have a YouTube and blog which I use as a platform to express the things I like and hopefully inspire young girls. I am the proud owner of an earrings business inspired by African print and I love shopping.

How old are you?

Who is your inspiration?

I don’t have one person as an inspiration, I feel inspired by a lot of people around me, but I love to see young people around my age being successful as it encourages me to reach for my goals in life.

Why did you start your blog?

I’ve always been interested in art, fashion and beauty and a few years ago I discovered the YouTube/blogging world and I fell in love with it and after years of being too scared I finally took the plunge and created a blog.

What is your blog about?

I would call it a lifestyle blog because I cover all the topics that I like such as art, fashion, beauty and life related topics that interest me.

What do you hope to achieve with this blog?
I hope to inspire people with what I have to offer and encourage young people to go after their goals.

What is your favourite article on your blog and why?

My favourite article on my blog so far is my London’s calling post because I really enjoyed filming and exploring that day. I also met a blogger that I follow, which was amazing. I was able to visit parts of London that I haven’t been before and it motivated me to go exploring more often.

How can other young people start their blogs? (Give a step by step guide- as detailed as possible)

Its actually not that difficult to start a blog or YouTube channel, the main thing that a person will need when starting a blog is actually passion as people will tell from the get go. Some people do it for sake of it or to be paid by YouTube.

What are the benefits of setting up a YouTube blog and how does one maintain it?

You get to meet people that are interested in the same things as you and you can get to network. I think the key to maintenance is being consistent and providing quality content.

Tell us about your earrings designs.

I wanted a way to incorporate African print into my everyday style and thought earrings were best. So I made myself a pair and I noticed that every time I wore them I got a lot of compliments about them. After a lot of  encouragement, I decided to turn it into a business and taadaaa… SR Earrings was born.

Why is it important for you to open an exhibition?

I want to have an exhibition to showcase my art and gain more exposure. My  ultimate goal is to open my own gallery. I love art and I want to share that with people.

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?

Rosa Parks, I remember hearing the story of Rosa Parks for the first time and I was inspired because I looked at her as someone who believed in herself  and stood up for her rights. She is an inspiration because of her bravery and that is why I would love to meet such a strong woman .

How would you encourage students who wants to pursue a career in fashion /beauty?  is there any prospects for them in life?

To be honest I feel like I’m the wrong person to ask about this, as a career in fashion is not my ultimate goal, I’m just a girl that loves art and creating. However I would say, starting a fashion blog is a good platform as it allows you to connect with other individuals who are interested in the same things as you. If you do remember to be original and don’t be afraid to think outside of  the box. I feel that if you work hard at what you do and continue to put the effort in, you will flourish so don’t be discouraged.

If you had to go back and say anything to your 16 year old self what would you say?

I would tell 16 year old Shevelle to stop being so insecure and be brave. I had an unhealthy insecurity about my legs which stopped me from showing them, I created a demon out of the scars and thought they were disgusting so I covered them up. now looking back at it I wish I was more comfortable in my own skin.  So 16 year old Shevelle BE BRAVE and continue working hard.

In one sentence, what do you wish for your future self?
I wish to be a inspirational, successful and happy lady 🙂
